Recently, we provided a dumpster that was used in a drug bust in the Summerdale neighborhood of Philadelphia.
According to authorities, on September 1, 2017, agents raided a home on the 1100 block of Rosalie Street to find more than 10,000 bags of narcotic drugs. As a result of this major drug sting, 10 people have been arrested.
They believe this drug to be heroin laced with fentanyl, a narcotic drug that is more powerful than oxycontin and morphine. On the street, fentanyl is in the form of a powder. It is so potent that just inhaling or absorbing this powder through the skin can be deadly. In the past, police officers have arrived at the scene of an overdose, only to overdose themselves.
During this incident, three cops were given Narcan, a nasal spray that can reverse overdoses, and taken to the hospital. They have since been released.
The opioid crisis is a serious problem that is plaguing our country. At Roll-Off Dumpster Direct, we are saddened by stories like this, but we are glad that we were able to supply a dumpster to assist, even in this small way.

Dumpster pools have been all the rage — we even reported on them in a previous post. However, the City of Philadelphia recently shut down the party after a block party rented a dumpster, filled it with water from a fire hydrant, and waded right in.
The city’s response wasn’t as lighthearted. The Streets Department is refusing to issue future block party permits to the street of the crime. Additionally, officials have questioned the dumpster rental company on their lack of permits and street protection.
The following is a clip from a statement released by the Mayor’s Office:
- First and foremost, this could reduce the amount of water available should a fire break out in that neighborhood. So if you would like to have water available should a fire break out in your home, don’t illegally tap a hydrant
- There is also the potential loss of life by injury due to the hydrant water pushing a small child or even an adult into oncoming traffic.
- Finally, remember that the pressure of the water coming out of the hydrant is so strong, and so powerful, that if opened too quickly or closed too quickly, it could deliver a jolt to the main of sufficient force that could break the main … and many blocks could lose water service until it is repaired.
What are your thoughts on dumpster pools and Philly’s reaction? Would you swim in a dumpster pool?
It’s that time of year where you’ll begin to see Christmas trees lining the sidewalks on trash day. However, many Philadelphians may be unaware that you do not need to throw away your tree. You can recycle it instead.
Philadelphia’s Christmas Tree Recycling Program runs from January 4, 2016 through January 16, 2016. You can drop your tree at any of the following Streets Department Sanitation Convenience Centers Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm:
- 3901 N Delaware Ave.
- 5100 Grays Ave.
- 2601 West Glenwood Ave.
- 3033 South 63rd St.
- Domino Lane and Umbria Street
- State Road and Ashburner Street
Additional drop-off locations are available only Saturday, January 9 and Saturday, January 16 between 9am and 3pm. You can find a list of those locations here. Just make sure that your tree is completely free of decorations and untied!
What if I can’t drop off my tree?
Christmas trees can also be collected at curbside on trash day, though these trees won’t be recycled. If you’re looking for ways to reuse your Christmas tree yourself, check out these suggestions from the City of Philadelphia Streets Department:
- Purchase potted trees and plant them after the holidays
- Use small pine limbs and needles as good winter mulch material
- Include your tree in backyard compost
If you live outside of Philadelphia, be sure to check with your local waste and sanitation department for Christmas tree recycling programs.
Now, you can get dinner, drinks, and a show in Upper Darby without ever leaving your seat. This is all thanks to the new Studio Movie Grill near the 69th Street Terminal, which is expected to play a major role in the 69th Street revitalization project.
This new establishment brought roughly 250 new jobs to Upper Darby and is also bringing a big crowd to an area that really needed the boost. At Roll-Off Dumpster Direct, we’re especially happy with this new business venture and we were glad to service over twenty dumpsters to its construction over the past few months.
The New Movie Experience
If you’re in the area, you can simply visit the Studio Movie Grill‘s website and make your reservation online. You won’t have to rush to get your ticket before the movie sells out. Once you arrive, you can skip the concession line and get comfy in the new spacious, leather seats. Choose from their cocktail selection and over 100 food options, including fresh farm-to-table produce, and a member of the serving staff will bring your meal without ever interrupting the film.
If you’re not in the mood for a movie, they also have a bar, TVs, and a pool table for anyone just looking for a relaxing night out. In our opinion, this could be the new hot spot in Upper Darby. Maybe we’ll see you there!
Philadelphia City Council recently approved a bill to encourage restaurants to compost food waste rather than grind it through a disposal unit.
The bill would cut in half the dumpster permit fee for units that will be used for composting purposes. This will prevent the waste from sitting in a regular dumpster until disposal, and eventually winding up in a landfill. According to Councilman Denny O’Brien, who sponsored the bill, the composting dumpsters will be good for neighbors of the restaurant. He said there will be fewer odors, less waste, and less frequent dumpster pickups. Also, the measure should save restaurant owners and the city some money. The bill now goes to the mayor, and it’s expected he’ll sign it.
You can read more about the story here.
Food Waste in Philadelphia
It’s estimated that the city of Philadelphia generates 150,000 tons of food waste every year. When that waste rots in the landfill, it becomes a significant source of methane. In fact, landfills are responsible for 20% of all methane emissions. Composted food waste is used to improve soil health and drought resistance.
What do you think, Philadelphians? Are you looking forward to fewer odors and insects surrounding restaurants? How do you feel about reducing food waste? Sound off in the comments below!
We just rented a dumpster to our friends at Bill Pickett Riding Academy in Philadelphia, PA. We were really taken with the idea of an equestrian program in the city — and just in time. Today marks the Chinese New Year, and the beginning of the year of the horse. Specifically, this is the year of the wooden horse. But, just what does that mean?
We’ve done some research and will do our best to prepare you for what’s to come in the year of the horse. First, be advised that 2014 will be a high energy year. This could mean speedy success or some unexpected thrills. Horses are very brave animals with high spirits, but they also can be cautious at times. Translation: Good luck will come in abundance this year, but you must act quickly and intelligently to take advantage. Don’t make rash decisions unless you feel certain. Also, horses have always been a reliable source of transportation so this could be a great year for travel.
Those born in horse years (2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966, 1954, 1942, 1930, 1918, 1906) are expected to have an especially fruitful year. People born in these years tend to be cheerful and clever. They enjoy being the center of attention and often excel in the workplace. They are known for being somewhat stubborn, as well. This is one of the best years for those born in horse years to aim for wealth, marriage, children, or other opportunities.
OK, so maybe we aren’t ready to write off the football season completely, but our recent visit to the exclusive Philadelphia Cricket Club opened our eyes to a whole new game.
Here’s the basic premise: It’s a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players on a field at the center of which is a rectangular 22-yard long pitch. Each team takes a turn to bat, attempting to score runs, while the other team fields. Each turn is known as an innings.
Here’s 5 interesting facts we learned about the sport of cricket and the Philly club.
1. The Philadelphia Cricket Club was founded in 1894.
2. It is said that the first recorded game of cricket was played in 1646, but it is said that similar games were played before this.
3. The longest cricket match took place in 1939 between England and South Africa, after 14 days it ended with a tie.
4. Cricket is reportedly the second most popular sport in the world behind soccer.
5. In the year 1900 cricket made its first and only appearance in the Olympics.
This Sunday, April 7, Roll Off Dumpster Direct will deliver to the Zombie Run at FDR Park in Philadelphia. The 3.1 mile run allows entrants to register as zombies or humans. Humans must outrun the zombies or else they become a tasty snack. We’ll be there for post-run clean up, piecing together the remains after the apocalyptic scene. Our dumpsters also double as a doomsday shelter, so be sure to check out our roomy shelters.
Residents around the Philadelphia area will soon be able to get delicious frozen treats from Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt in Broomall. We recently delivered dumpsters to the site to help get the location up and running. The new location will be off Sproul Rd, in The Lawrence Park shopping center along with Homegoods, TJ Maxx, and Acme. In July 2010, Restaurant Business Magazine ranked Menchie’s #1 on their Future 50′ list rating Menchie’s as the fastest growing restaurant franchise with a 748 percent growth. The company has over 235 international locations and continues to grow. The first store was opened on May 15, 2007 in Los Angeles.
Roll-Off Dumpster Direct might soon be a red carpet name. Maybe not exactly, but we did deliver for a movie shoot near Reading, PA. The movie title has not been released, but the film maker is Shooters Inc., located in Philadelphia. Our rental dumpsters are movie-star approved for all jobs.
Last fall Shooters Inc. received an Emmy nomination for its Comcast SportsNet campaign.
For more information about the film company, visit Shootersinc.com.
Roll-Off Dumpster Direct delivered a 30-yd dumpster to the Visitation Nuns of Philadelphia. Located at 58th and City Line Avenue, the community is one of about 160 monasteries of the worldwide Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. This Order was founded all the way back in 1610.
So, what exactly is the day in the life of a nun like? After waking at 5:30 a.m., the nuns engage in choir five times a day, spend an hour and a half in mental prayer, and engage in spiritual reading for 30 minutes a day. The nuns are encouraged to observe silence throughout much of the day except during recreation time after dinner. In addition, the nuns use extra time to work on monastery maintenance projects, and Roll-Off provides dumpsters to help with these projects.
We recently provided a dumpster to Air Products for the clean out of an industrial gas warehouse. Our roll off dumpster was used to remove non-hazardous materials from the warehouse during the clean up process. Headquartered in Bethlehem, PA, Air Products has been providing a range of industries with gases and related products since 1940. Some of the areas they are working include hydrogen fuel and liquid natural gas for cars. They are industry leaders and Roll Off Dumpster Direct is proud to be able to help them with this job.
“Clean up in aisle 6!” Well not exactly but we got a call for a serious store clean up in a Philadelphia, PA Sam’s Club location. They needed a 10 yard dumpster to help with the clean up after a deep fryer had spilled its greasy contents all over the place. Removing the grease and dirt created from the massive spill generated a lot of trash that would have overwhelmed their existing waste containers. We were able to get a dumpster quickly out to their location so they could get rid of the mess. Definitely one of the greasiest jobs we have helped clean up.
The stately boathouses of Philadelphia’s boathouse row are a historic landmark and a center of the rowing world. Even these facilities need to be tidied-up occasionally and recently we delivered a dumpster for a boathouse clean out. All that history means there is a lot of junk left in the houses and that is where are dumpsters proved their worth. The Schuylkill Navy is the oldest amateur governing body in sports in the USA and continues to promote rowing in Philadelphia. The Schuylkill River is also home to a number of rowing regattas including the Dad Vail Regatta which is the largest collegiate regatta in the country.
Last week, during our usual dumpster pick-up service, we were dismayed to find one of our dumpsters in Glen Mills, PA had been subject to dumpster fire. Such fires may seem to be a unique problem for our industry, but the truth is that they are most dangerous to the
communities and areas in which they occur. As a result, it is always essential to follow a few (incredibly) easy rules and avoid them in your town or neighborhood. First, always make sure cigarettes are FULLY put out before tossing them in a dumpster. If at all possible, toss cigarettes in their own recepticles outside of stores or other buildings. If you must dispose of any ashes or other remnants from a fire-pit, barbecue, etc, make sure to store them in a safe trash can until they too are fully extinguished (a good rule of thumb is 2 or 3 days) before placing them in a dumpster.
Unfortunately, in addition to the more accidental causes discussed above, many dumpster fires also start as a result of arson (as we suspect for the dumpster in Glen Mills). In these cases, there is little to say. Starting a dumpster fire is a terrible and dangerous idea for those involved and anyone else in the surrounding community. The contents of a dumpster are never fully known (though some customers give us a general idea before renting) and could quite easily be hazardous or even explosive. Furthermore, dumpster fires can even spread if the dumpster is not handled or removed properly. Please be careful and take the necessary steps to avoid these dangerous occurrences. For safe, professional and affordable dumpster rental service, please contact Roll-Off Dumpster Direct.
Roll-off Dumpster Direct is proud to have Green Energy Capital Partners, LLC as a client of our dumpster rental services. Based in Conshohocken, PA they have been working for the past couple years to develop and construct a solar farm in Pennsylvania. Solar plant development has been happening out West for quite awhile but only a small number of projects have been built East of the Mississippi.
The park is currently under construction and is scheduled to be fully operational in the Fall when it will be connected to the PPL power grid. The current plans are for a 130 acre plus solar park located near Nesquehoning, PA in Carbon County. This is scaled back from initial plans for an even larger facility.
