Fort Detrick was historically the center of the American biological weapons program from 1943 to 1969, but the program has since stopped. Still, the base is home to much of the development of the US biological defense program. The site hosts the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command.

Fort Detrick is also the largest employer in Frederick County, Maryland.
