6 Ways to Recycle Your Christmas Tree

2. Think About Springtime: You don’t need special or extra equipment! Just break the tree into small bits with whatever tools you have on hand. Don’t worry about the needles—if they end up in the soil they’ll help your plants retain moisture. Putting down the larger pieces first before backfilling in with soil will allow your plants to grow deeper roots and be more stable when the growing period takes off!
3. Recycle It: Check the details in your city. Some offer curbside recycling, but many don’t. In that case, most cities offer a location where you can drop off your tree and have it recycled when the time comes. In fact, many cities encourage you to drop your trees off at the local zoo, as they use these trees for homes for the animals or exercise areas in the exhibits.
4. Treat Your Dog to a Log: While you probably don’t want to give your entire tree to your dog, chopping up your tree into some fun-sized logs for your dog can make for a fun afternoon of fetch. It will also give your dog a chew toy (for a little while anyway).
5. Make Crafts: Chop the tree trunk into 2-inch disks to create rustic decor items. Use them on your walkway, garden, or dress them up for use in the kitchen as a Lazy Susan or place for salt and pepper to live.
