Love penguins? Love the zoo? We do, and we were so excited to help out the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore with a dumpster delivery.

Right now, construction is underway for the African Penguin Exhibit, set to open this fall. By visiting the zoo’s website, you can see pictures of the progress as it goes on. In addition to providing a fun, safe habitat for the penguins, this new facility will allow visitors to get a closer look at the animals. Walking through the exhibit you’ll be able to watch penguins waddle on land or swimming underwater — you can even take part in a Keeper Chat where you can talk to a real zoo keeper. If you’re lucky, you’ll be around for one of the penguin encounters.

Currently, 60 penguins live in the Rock Island Penguin Exhibit. Although they’re happy where they are, the new exhibit will create space to expand the penguin colony to 100 birds. Also, the African Penguin Exhibit will provide innovative resources for the penguins and conserve millions of gallons of water each year.

The African penguin population has been in decline since the turn of the century, and wild penguins are forced to compete with professional fishermen and other wildlife for food. This new exhibit will provide an accommodating home for many of these birds.
